The specimens, from the Opel Zoo in Kronberg im Taunus (Germany), bring the total number of northern bald ibises in the Empordà to 56.
Last Monday, 2 March, the Fundació Alive’s aviary welcomed two highly significant additions to its conservation project: two northern bald ibises (Geronticus eremita) from Opel Zoo in Kronberg im Taunus, Germany.
The arrival of the two northern bald ibises at Opel Zoo
The two specimens arrived at the Empordà facilities on the afternoon of Monday 2 March and have already been integrated into the aviary with the rest of the flock. Despite sharing the same origin, their initial behaviour has been quite different. One of the ibises, a year older than his new companions, has shown a more dominant and authoritarian attitude from the very beginning. The other individual, by contrast, adopts a more discreet and timid demeanour, trying to go unnoticed as it adapts to its new surroundings and the social dynamics of its new family.
Ring-fitting and GPS
In the coming days, the ring-fitting and GPS device placement process is scheduled to be carried out on both individuals from Opel Zoo, a crucial step for monitoring and studying their movements as part of the reintroduction project.
The total count
With these two new additions, the population of northern bald ibises (Geronticus eremita) at the Fundació Alive now stands at 56 individuals, a figure that consolidates the project’s growth and reinforces its commitment to the recovery of this endangered species.
